World sight day celebration in Abuja

 

Nigerian Optometric Association Abuja held its WSD celebrations

The celebrations started with a walk around the federal secretariat, where we could only obtain police permit because of the security situation

 During the walk, we distributed handbills, while wearing WSD and NOA branded t- shirt

There was a one hour radio program at the Rhythm FM, situated at Silver bird complex. The Chairman of NOA  Abuja, Dr. Okey Okoroji was guest at the program. He spoke extensively on Vision 2020 and the journey so far, the general protocol and future plans. He answered questions from callers during the program.

NOA was represented by the VP NORTH at the ministerial press briefing by the minister of health, where azithromycin was launched for the treatment of trachoma.  INTERNATIONAL TRACHOMA INITIATIVES.  Donated azithromycin to Nigeria. WE had attended all the meetings and contributed to the planning of the ministerial press briefing at the Federal Ministry of Health. The minister’s speech indicated his strong resolve to re -invigorate the NBPP (National blindness prevention program).

 

We thereafter proceeded to KETTI village where we had an eye screening. during which upwards of 30 optometrists participated   and we examined them and gave out glasses and drugs  and gave them food and gift items.  We also provided music throughout the celebrations. We saw about 300 people and glasses and drugs were given out

Simultaneously eye screening was going at gwagwalada where we also gave out glasses.

All clinics within the FCT rendered free eye examination to patients on that day

We had spot interviews with the media and they were all aired

 All the events were properly covered by both electronic and print media and have been aired. We had given out the press release to all media house in Abuja.
